Arbeit macht frei is a German phrase, literally work makes free. The slogan is known for having been placed over the entrances to a number of Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust, including most infamously Auschwitz I.

Fry, the English word, is pronounced similarly to the German word frei. The meanings of fry include: To cook in hot fat, to suffer because of too much heat, to be executed by the electric chair, to destroy with excessive heat, voltage, or current.
